'Crown,' 'Mank,' 'Borat' nominated for Golden Globes

The streaming service Netflix -- which released "The Crown," "Ozark," "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," "Mank" and "The Trial of the Chicago 7" -- led the field with 42 nominations.

Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson read aloud from their homes in an online ceremony Wednesday the nominees for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards.

The streaming service Netflix -- which released The Crown, Ozark, The Queen's Gambit, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7 -- led the field with 42 nominations.

In the TV categories, The Crown dominated with six nominations, while Schitt's Creek (Pop TV) earned five, and Ozark and The Undoing (HBO) each picked up four.

In the film competitions, Mank was nominated for six Globes, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is up for five, and The Father (Sony Pictures Classics,) Nomadland (Searchlight Pictures) and Promising Young Woman (Focus Features) each earned four nods.

HBO earned seven nominations for TV honors, Hulu grabbed six, and Pop TV and Showtime each earned five.

Amazon Studios scored seven nominations for film, while Focus Features, Searchlight Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures are all in the running for five awards apiece. Warner Bros. Pictures earned four nominations and Universal Pictures garnered three nods.

This year's Golden Globes class also includes for the first time three female Best Director candidates: Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, Regina King for One Night in Miami (Amazon) and ChloƩ Zhao for Nomadland.

Winners of the Globes, which honor excellence in TV and film, are to be announced on Feb. 28.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association bestows the prizes.

Comic actresses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting this year's ceremony. They previously hosted the 2013, 2014 and 2015 ceremonies. Comedian Ricky Gervais presided over the 2020 edition.

Television pioneer and political activist Norman Lear is to receive the Carol Burnett Award and actress Jane Fonda will be presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Satchel and Jackson Lee -- the children of filmmaker Spike Lee -- will serve as Golden Globes Ambassadors.
