COL FB: West Virginia 43, Connecticut 16

MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Geno Smith threw four touchdown passes Saturday to lead 19th-ranked West Virginia past visiting Connecticut 43-16.

Three of Smith's scoring strikes came in the third quarter when the Mountaineers (5-1, 1-0 Big East) scored 23 points and blew open a game they had led 10-9 at halftime.

Smith finished the game 27-of-45 for 450 yards and was intercepted once. Stedman Bailey caught seven passes for 178 yards and two TDs.

West Virginia finished the game with 541 total offensive yards to 275 for Connecticut (2-4, 0-1) even though the Huskies enjoyed an edge in time of possession.

UConn quarterback Johnny McEntee was 21-of-37 for 193 yards and Dave Teggert kicked three field goals in the first half to keep the game close until the third quarter when West Virginia outscored the Huskies 23-0.
