'Harry Potter' leads Saturn Awards field

LOS ANGELES, March 14 (UPI) -- "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" led the field with nine nominations Thursday, as the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films announced nominees for its 28th Annual Saturn Awards.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "Brotherhood of the Wolf" had eight nominations each, while "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" had seven and "The Others" had six.

"Planet of the Apes" and "Vanilla Sky" had five nominations each. "Hannibal," "Mulholland Drive," "The Mummy Returns" and "Shrek" had four each.

"A.I. Artificial Intelligence," "Jurassic Park III," "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," "The One," "Planet of the Apes" and "Vanilla Sky" are nominated for best science fiction film.

The nominees for best fantasy film are "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "Monsters, Inc.," "The Mummy Returns," "Shrek," and "Spy Kids."

"The Devil's Backbone," "From Hell," "Hannibal," "Jeepers Creepers," "The Others" and "13 Ghosts" are up for best horror film.

The nominees for best action/adventure film are "Black Hawk Down," "Brotherhood of the Wolf," "Joy Ride," "The Man Who Wasn't There," "Memento" and "Mulholland Drive."

Tom Cruise ("Vanilla Sky"), Johnny Depp ("From Hell"), Anthony Hopkins ("Hannibal"), Guy Pearce ("Memento"), Kevin Spacey ("K-Pax") and Billy Bob Thornton ("The Man Who Wasn't There") were nominated for best actor.

The best actress nominees are Kate Beckinsale ("Serendipity"), Nicole Kidman ("The Others"), Angelina Jolie ("Lara Croft: Tomb Raider"), Julianne Moore ("Hannibal"), Frances O'Connor ("A.I. Artificial Intelligence") and Naomi Watts ("Mulholland Drive").

In the TV categories, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was tops with five nominations and "Enterprise" had four -- giving UPN the most nominations of any network, nine.

The Sci Fi Channel had seven nominations, five of them for "Farscape"

Three Stan Winston-produced shows for Cinemax's "Creature Features" film series -- "The She-Creature", "Teenage Caveman", and "Earth Vs. the Spider" -- were nominated for best single TV presentation.

"Angel" (WB), "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" (UPN), "Dark Angel" (Fox), "Enterprise" (UPN), "Smallville" (WB) and "The X-Files" (Fox) were nominated for best network TV series.

The nominees for best actor in a TV series are Richard Dean Anderson ("Stargate SG-1"), Scott Bakula ("Enterprise"), David Boreanaz ("Angel"), Ben Browder ("Farscape"), Robert Patrick ("The X-Files") and Tom Welling ("Smallville").

Jessica Alba ("Dark Angel"), Gillian Anderson ("The X-Files"); Claudia Black ("Farscape"), Yancy Butler ("Witchblade"), Sarah Michelle Gellar ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") and Kristin Kreuk ("Smallville") are up for best actress in a TV series.

For the first time, the academy will present Saturn Awards for DVD releases. To mark the occasion, the academy will also present a special achievement award to Anchor Bay Entertainment -- a leading DVD releasing company.

The Dr. Donald A. Reed Award -- named in honor of the founder of the academy, who died last year -- will be presented to Paramount Pictures head Sherry Lansing.

Life career awards will be presented to Marvel Comics editor Stan Lee and movie poster illustrator Drew Struzan ("Indiana Jones," "Back to the Future").

The late Samuel Z. Arkoff, co-founder of American International Pictures ("Beach Blanket Bingo," "The Abominable Dr. Phibes," "I Was a Teenage Werewolf") will receive the George Pal Memorial Award posthumously.

The 28th Annual Saturn Awards will be presented in June in Los Angeles. No date has been set yet for the presentation.
