PHOENIX, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Hispanic communities across Arizona are questioning the results of a recent poll that found most residents trust their local police.

The survey, conducted in May by the Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State University, polled 800 Arizona residents, The Arizona Republic reported.

The survey found that 89 percent of those asked said they had trust in police. But Arizona’s Hispanic communities question the results, particularly in cases involving illegal immigrants, the Republic reported.

Elias Bermudez, a Hispanic activist and founder of Immigrants Without Borders, said there is actually very little trust of police among the state’s Hispanic population.

“There is no trust right now in law enforcement,” Bermudez said. “And people will not call a police officer. They value their ability to stay in the country more than their own life."
