Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Ian Poulter managed a bogey on the eighth hole Sunday at the 2017 PGA Championship, but berated a rules official in the process.
Poulter carded a 71 on Saturday and was tied for 37th place heading into Sunday's final round at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. He entered the clubhouse Sunday tied for 25th with a score of 69.
He lined up on the par 4 eighth tee and ripped his first shot right into the tree line. He took a penalty for his second shot on the 346-yard hole, but it didn't come without controversy.
Poulter, Jordan Spieth and tournament staff searched for the ball in the trees but couldn't find it within the five-minute time allowed. The ball obviously cleared the hazard stakes, but since they couldn't find it, a rules official said he would have to go back to the tee.
"This area here is hazard, its cut and came down along this line."
"If it's here, we would see it," he said. "You got to be kidding me. You absolutely got to be kidding me."
The ball was eventually found and the rules officials consulted to allow Poulter to take a drop.
Poulter hit his next shot out of the area and carded a five on the hole.
