Michigan State approves Dantonio's contract extension

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio's annual contract extension was approved by the school's board of trustees, multiple outlets reported on Friday.

Dantonio's rolling contract, which stipulates that one year is added to his deal on an annual basis, extends through the 2024 season.

According to reporters at Friday's board meeting in East Lansing, Mich., the trustees did not discuss the contract at any length before approving the extension.

The 61-year-old Dantonio has denied accusations that he mishandled sexual assault claims against players on his team in the past. According to an ESPN "Outside the Lines" report, a minimum of 16 football players were accused of sexual assault or violence against women since Dantonio became coach.

The scandal involving the university and Dr. Larry Nassar, a team doctor at Michigan State and for USA Gymnastics, has already cost school president Lou Anna Simon and athletic director Mark Hollis their jobs. Simon resigned and Hollis retired.

Dantonio has been the Spartans coach since 2007, with a 100-45 mark in 11 seasons. Michigan State finished with a 10-3 record in 2017.
