Florida Atlantic gives Lane Kiffin 10-year extension

Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic agreed to a new 10-year contract, the school announced on Tuesday.

Kiffin, who has resurrected the school's football program in just one season, has guided the Owls (10-3) to nine straight victories and a win in the Conference USA championship. Florida Atlantic will face Akron on Tuesday night in the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl.

The 10 wins represent the most in program history for the Owls in their 13 years as an FBS school. Florida Atlantic posted three consecutive 3-9 marks prior to Kiffin's arrival.

"This is further proof of FAU's unbridled ambition," Florida Atlantic president Dr. John Kelly told ESPN on Tuesday.

Kiffin's initial deal was for five years and paid him $950,000 annually. The 42-year-old's new deal will stretch through December 2027.

"We are grateful that the president and university are this excited about what we are doing here at FAU and into the future, although our focus remains completely on the team and this historic season finale tonight on ESPN," Kiffin told ESPN.

Kiffin enjoyed success in his first season in Boca Raton after a bumpy ride as Alabama offensive coordinator during which the Crimson Tide won a national title following the 2015 season.

Kiffin owns a 45-24 record all-time as a head coach that includes stops at USC and Tennessee.

Kiffin also went 5-15 in parts of two seasons as coach of the NFL's Oakland Raiders before being dismissed as coach four games into the 2008 season.
