COL BKB: Indiana 73, Michigan 71

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Verdell Jones gave Indiana a four-point lead with 22 seconds left Thursday and the No. 12 Hoosiers held on to edge 13th-ranked Michigan 73-71.

Michigan's Zack Novak missed a desperation 3-point attempt at the buzzer, leaving Indiana with its second win over a nationally-ranked team in the young Big Ten Conference season.

The Hoosiers defeated Ohio State on New Year's Eve after opening the league campaign with a setback against Michigan State.

A jump shot by Jones lifted Indiana into a 72-68 lead but Stu Douglass hit a 3-pointer for Michigan with 3 seconds left.

Christian Watford completed the scoring by making 1-of-2 free throws for Indiana (14-1, 2-1 Big Ten). Watford hit 8-of-11 shots from the field and paced the Hoosiers with 25 points.

The Hoosiers led by as many as 15 points in the first half and settled for a seven-point advantage at the break.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 19 points for Michigan (12-3, 2-1).
