Rwanda, Congo to enter talks

ABUJA, Nigeria, June 24 (UPI) -- Rising tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have prompted the two nations' presidents to arrange peace talks in Nigeria.

Last weekend, amid heavy tension between the Congo and Rwanda, 10,000 Congolese troops were stationed at the Rwandan border, igniting fears of a new conflict breaking out between the two countries.

Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo has encouraged talks between Rwanda and the Congo, offering to host them in Nigerian capital Abuja, the BBC reported Thursday.

The talks are scheduled Friday, when Congolese President Paul Kagame will meet with President Joseph Kabila of Rwanda to discuss the situation.

Kabila said the troops moved there because of disorder in eastern Congo. He has previously said war with Rwanda was not in the best interests of his country.

"The (Nigerian) president has been in constant dialogue previously with both President Kagame and President Kabila to resolve differences between their governments," said Obasanjo's spokesman, Remi Oyosaid.
