Former Georgia coach Richt set to become Miami Hurricanes' new leader, reports say

MIAMI, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Sources told sport media Wednesday that fired University of Georgia head football coach Mark Richt will take over the program at the University of Miami.

A source told CBS Sports Wednesday that Richt has agreed to become Miami's next coach following the departure of Al Golden on Oct. 25. Richt was himself fired by the University of Georgia Monday after leading his team to a 9-3 record in 2015.

Richt was among multiple candidates speculated as possibilities for the Hurricanes job, along with former Miami coach Butch Davis and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen.

Richt, a quarterback at Miami from 1978 to 1982, reportedly met with school officials Tuesday and expressed interest in the job.

After spending 15 seasons at Georgia, Richt and the school mutually parted ways on Monday. During his tenure, Richt compiled a record of 145-51. The firing surprised many due to his success at Georgia and a contract extension he was given in January that was supposed to keep him at the school through 2019.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is believed to be Georgia's top target to replace Richt.
