This is the final year for the often-controversial computerized ranking system. Next season a four-team playoff format will be instituted.

FSU last played in the BCS championship game in 1999, when it bested the SEC's Virginia Tech. The Seminoles' upcoming contest against Auburn will be their third against an SEC opponent this season.

The SEC, meanwhile, landed a team in the national championship for the eighth straight year.

In other BCS bowl games, two-time defending champion and No. 3 Alabama will face No. 11 Oklahoma in the Jan. 2 Sugar Bowl, and fourth-rated Michigan State will take on No. 5 Stanford in the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl.

No. 6 Big 12 champion Baylor will take on No. 15 Central Florida in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day, while 12th-rated Clemson will battle No. 7 Ohio State in the Jan. 3 Orange Bowl.
