IRVING, Texas, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent Saturday was charged with manslaughter and drunken driving in the death of teammate Jerry Brown, police said.

Irving, Texas, police said Brent was charged after a car crash early Saturday that killed Brown, a linebacker on the Cowboys' practice squad, who was riding with Brent in the vehicle.

Authorities said Brent was taken into custody after incident, in which a car he was driving hit a curb at a high rate of speed and flipped at least one time before landing on a service road.

Brown, a 25-year-old Illinois teammate of Brent's, was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Police said Brent was booked into the Irving City Jail on a count of intoxication manslaughter after undergoing field sobriety tests at the scene of the accident.

"We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."
