COL FB: Michigan 23, Virginia Tech 20 (OT)

NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A 37-yard field goal by Brendan Gibbons in overtime gave No. 12 Michigan a 23-20 win over No. 11 Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl Tuesday.

Gibbons got a shot at winning after an apparent diving touchdown catch in overtime by Virginia Tech (11-3) receiver Danny Coale was waved off following a review of the play.

The victory sealed a solid debut season for Michigan (11-2) Coach Brady Hoke even though his team managed only 184 yards of total offense in the contest.

Gibbons kicked two field goals in regulation and Junior Hemmingway caught two touchdown passes from Denard Robinson in the win. Robinson was 9-of-21 for 117 yards passing with two TDs and one interception.

Virginia Tech had 377 total yards but lost the ball twice on turnovers and was penalized seven times for 68 yards. Logan Thomas threw for 214 yards and Coale finished with eight receptions for 117 yards.

Justin Myer kicked four field goals for the Hokies but missed to the right on his 35-yard attempt in overtime after Coale's catch was ruled incomplete. Logan Thomas scored the only Virginia Tech touchdown on a 1-yard run with 10:22 to play in regulation that tied the score 17-17.
