CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Perry Jones ran for 150 yards Saturday and helped run out the clock down the stretch to preserve Virginia's 24-21 upset of No. 12 Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets suffered their first loss of the season, chiefly because of their inability to slow down Jones. He had by far his best rushing day of the season.
Virginia (4-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) let an early 14-0 lead get away, but went back in front for good when Clifton Richardson ran 22 yards for a score with 4 minutes left in the first half.
Robert Randolph's field goal with 18 seconds to go in the half boosted Virginia's lead to 10 points and eventually turned out to be the difference.
Georgia Tech closed to within 24-21 midway through the third period on quarterback Tevin Washington's 1-yard run and that was still the score when the Yellow Jackets punted the ball away at their own 39-yard line with 7 minutes to go.
Virginia kept the ball the rest of the way. Jones carried four times on the clock-killing drive for 31 yards and time expired with the Cavaliers having reached the Georgia Tech 6-yard line.
Georgia Tech (6-1, 3-1) attempted only eight passes for the entire game and two of the throws by Washington were intercepted.
