Mickelson: Bad shots costly at 'Monster'

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Oakland Hills in Michigan will severely punish Ryder Cup players for hitting bad shots, U.S. star Phil Mickelson said Wednesday.

Mickelson and team USA take on Team Europe in the 35th Ryder Cup Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the par-70, 7,770-yard course nicknamed the "The Monster."

"Oakland Hills is a great site for this event. There are a number of great match holes because the penalty for a poor drive or one miss struck shot is very severe," Mickelson said.

"You're fighting for par if you miss a fairway."

Hal Sutton is the American team captain and Bernhard Langer heads the European team. Both are Ryder Cup veterans.

The Europeans won by three points in the last cup battle in 2002.

The American players are Chad Campbell, Stewart Cink, Chris DiMarco, Fred Funk, Jim Furyk, Jay Haas, Davis Love III, Mickelson, Kenny Perry, Chris Riley, David Toms and Tiger Woods.
