WINDSOR, Ontario, March 26 (UPI) -- The family of a 22-year-old Canadian man swept out to sea by a giant wave off Australia's southwestern coast said hope is fading he'll be found.

Toronto resident and pharmacology student Ali Hassan Choucair was one of two people swept off a rock south of Albany, in Western Australia, on Saturday, the Melbourne Herald-Sun reported.

The other man caught by the wave and pulled into the surf managed to make it ashore, but air, land and sea searches since haven't been able to locate Choucair, the newspaper reported.

Inspector Paul Zegir of the Western Australia Police told the Windsor Star in Canada the area called The Gap (NYSE:GPS) was notoriously dangerous.

"There's a lot of bad ocean and rocks, so you don't swim," he said.

Choucair's father, older brother and a cousin went to Australia Tuesday, while cousin Zara Choucair in Windsor told the Star hope was dimming but not lost.

"We are still holding, still holding," she said. "The police are still searching for him. We are keeping hope they will still find him."
