Union complains about portable urine bags

MONTROSE, Colo., March 21 (UPI) -- Union officials say a Colorado supervisor for Qwest Communications overstepped his bounds by encouraging employees to use portable urine bags.

Reed Roberts, an administrative director at the Communications Workers of America District 7, said the manager gave the portable urine bags to 25 male field technicians to cut back on extended bathroom breaks, the Rocky Mountain News reported Friday.

"We deal with a lot of silliness in corporate America, but you've got to admit, it takes the freakin' cake," Roberts said.

Roberts said he filed a complaint about the issue with Qwest's corporate labor relations department, but company spokeswoman Jennifer Barton said the union has not filed an official grievance over the bags.

She said use of the portable urinals is strictly voluntary.

"They are there for convenience, and they are there because employees asked for them," she said.

"There's no policy whatsoever" requiring employees to use them, she said.
