Secretary Kerry to drop hockey puck at Olympic send-off in Washington, D.C.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, an avid hockey fan, will participate in an Olympic send-off as he drops a puck at the start of Thursday's Washington Capitals vs. Winnipeg Jets hockey game, in which eight players from both teams wills soon head to Sochi, Russia, to compete in the Winter Olympics.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will drop a puck at a hockey game on Thursday as part of an Olympic send-off for eight hockey players who will be headed soon to compete at the Sochi Winter Games.

The ceremonial puck drop is scheduled to happen prior to the start of Thursday's Washington Capitals vs. Winnipeg Jets hockey game at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Washington Capitals players John Carlson (United States), Alex Ovechkin (Russia), Nicklas Backstrom (Sweden), and Martin Erat (Czech Republic) will represent their respective countries at the Winter Olympics.

Winnipeg Jets players Blake Wheeler (United States), Michael Frolik (Czech Republic), Ondrej Pavelec (Czech Republic), and Olli Jokinen (Finland) will represent their respective countries at the Winter Olympics.
