Polish PM criticizes Russian elections

BRUSSELS, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk asked the European Union Tuesday not to tolerate reported irregularities during Russia's general election, Polish Radio said.

Tusk, on his first visit to Brussels since he took the office, said Polish observers who took part in monitoring teams in Russia voiced their criticism of election standards that allegedly were not democratic, the radio said.

In Brussels, Tusk held talks with Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission.

After being sworn in as the prime minister Nov. 16, Tusk said his coalition government will work to mend relations with the European Union and particularly Germany.

His plans also included better ties with Russia.

Tusk inherited those tense relations from the conservative nationalist government of former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, whose Law and Justice party was defeated by Tusk's pro-EU Civic Platform in parliamentary elections late in October.

Back in 2005, Russia imposed a ban on imports of Polish meat, claiming the products were of low quality.

In turn, Poland, claiming Moscow's move was in retaliation for Warsaw's support of the 2004 anti-Russian "orange revolution" in Ukraine, blocked EU efforts to open talks on a new economic cooperation agreement with Russia.
