Cheney: Iran 'fishing in troubled waters'

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney says Iran "is fishing in troubled waters" by supplying Iraqi insurgents with explosives and other support.

Appearing on "Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace," Cheney said the arrest of some Iranians in Iraq and the presence of a U.S. aircraft carrier and other forces are "reassurance to our friends in the region that the United States is committed to their security and that we're a major presence there now and we expect to continue to be one in the future."

On the broadcast, Cheney looked at repeated video clips of President Bush in the past few months saying more U.S. troops in Iraq would undermine strategy and the war against the insurgents is being won.

"Absolutely we're winning," the vice president said, citing the toppling of the Saddam Hussein regime and Saddam's recent hanging.

"Saddam has been brought to justice. He's dead. He was executed, as we all know, here a few weeks ago. His government is gone."
