Kerry claims Rhode Island primary

PROVIDENCE, R.I., March 2 (UPI) -- Sen. John Kerry was the runaway winner Tuesday in the Rhode Island Democratic presidential primary, taking more than 70 percent of the vote.

With 94 percent of the precincts counted, Kerry had 71 percent of the vote, followed by Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., who had 19 percent. Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who dropped from the race Feb. 18, was third at 4 percent, ahead of the Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, at 3 percent. Al Sharpton was not on the ballot.

The outcome was no real surprise, since Kerry is from neighboring Massachusetts.

Rhode Island had 21 Democratic National Convention delegates at stake Tuesday, out of a total 1,151 across the 10-state Super Tuesday voting. At total of 2,162 convention delegates are needed to secure the party's nomination.
