Iran promises access to nuclear program

TEHRAN, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Iran said Tuesday it has nothing to hide and agreed to "total transparency" in nuclear inspections, whose deadline is just 10 days away, news reports said.

Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazzi met with three European foreign ministers and made the announcement afterward, Radio Free Europe reported.

He spoke after talks in Tehran with visiting British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin.

Kharazi also told reporters Iran's rights to the legitimate use of nuclear energy must be respected.

The three European ministers also met with the head of Iran's Supreme Council on National Security, Hassan Rohani, before holding talks with the country's reform-minded President Mohammad Khatami.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, a part of the United Nations, has set an Oct. 31 deadline for Iran to prove it is not using its atomic energy program as cover to develop nuclear weapons. Failure to comply would lead to a possible Security Council vote invoking sanctions.
