RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Great Britain's Justin Rose had a delayed reaction after taking a hack with a 7-iron Thursday in Rio de Janeiro.

Rose, 36, eventually lifted his arms skyward and smiled, after he realized his 189-yard tee shot had lipped into the fourth hole of the Olympic Golf Course. Rose's rip was the first hole-in-one in Olympics history.

Rose's ace led him to a 4-under-par 67 on the day. That mark was good for four shots behind clubhouse leader Marc Fraser, of Australia.

"It's one of the icing on the cake moments," Rose told USA Today. "When you're the first to do anything no one can ever take that away from you. That was definitely a cool moment."

Rose told David Wharton of the Los Angeles Times that he didn't see the shot all of the way through.

"It was either in or it was off the back edge," Rose told Wharton. "And the way the reaction was from the few people around the green, we figured it had gone in. Although it would have been a great trick to play on me if it had gone 20 yards over the back."

Rose is currently underway in round 2 of the individual golf tournament. He ranks No. 12 in the world golf rankings.
