Watch: Michael Jordan outfits UNC football in Jordan brand

March 6 (UPI) -- Jumpman is expanding its reign over Chapel Hill.

North Carolina's most famous alumnus is spreading his name to the gridiron this season. The Tar Heels football team will become just the second squad in the land to sport Jordan brand apparel. The University of Michigan wore Jordan jerseys last season.

Jordan made the announcement at halftime during the Tar Heels' 90-83 win against Duke at the Dean E. Smith Center. The video shown during the game featured photos from the Tar Heels' trophy case and highlights from Jordan's time at the school. It then cuts over to the football facility, showing Jordan walking in the locker room. The end of the video shows Jordan's logo on the football field at Kenan Memorial Stadium.

The Tar Heels wore Nike last season.

"It's always great to come home," Jordan said during the announcement. "It's a great welcome. I appreciate the hospitality. In the 30-something years that I have been away from the university, I have learned a lot about business and about life. I come back as a businessman to say, I'm happy to extend the Jordan brand relationship not only for the game of basketball, but for the game of football."

"I am a diehard Carolina fan, no matter what sport is being played with UNC on its chest. I am extremely proud in terms of what coach Fedora has done for the football team and I think bigger and better things are about to happen."

The new look will debut on Sept. 2 as the Tar Heels host the University of California in its home opener.

"What a great opportunity for UNC football to partner with the Jordan brand," UNC football coach Larry Fedora said. "We all know Michael Jordan is the greatest of all time. He is the original G.O.A.T. We'll be honored to wear that Jumpman logo on our uniforms next year. And I promise you this, we will work extremely hard to extend that brand and extend the legacy that is UNC and the Jordan brand."

"And also, I understand Mike you've always wanted to know what its like to play in Kenan Stadium. We found out got one year of eligibility left and we want you on our team next year."

The Tar Heels went 8-5 overall last season and finished second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 5-3 mark.
