Girlfriend charged with killing ex-S.C. State football player

EDGEFIELD, S.C., April 30 (UPI) -- A South Carolina woman has been charged with killing her boyfriend, a former defensive tackle for South Carolina State.

Ashley Butler, 23, was arrested Friday when police responded to a report of shots fired at the home she shared with Otis Matthew Key Jr., 25, in Johnston, The (Columbia) State reported. Key was still alive when police arrived but died at a hospital.

Police Chief Chris Aston said officers seized a .38-caliber revolver containing spent shells.

Key's football career ended in 2009. He was working at Valley Protein and living in Johnston, a small town about 40 miles southwest of Columbia with Butler and their two children, ages 7 months and 18 months.

Butler was being held Monday at the Edgefield County Jail.
