COL FB: West Virginia 31, Maryland 21

MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Geno Smith threw three touchdown passes to Tavon Austin Saturday to lead No. 7 West Virginia to a 31-21 victory over Maryland.

Smith was 30-of-43 for 338 yards in the air for West Virginia (3-0) and Austin led all receivers with 13 catches for 179 yards.

Maryland (2-2) also relied on its passing game. Perry Hills threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, two to Stefon Diggs, despite being sacked five times.

Maryland had a total of 46 yards rushing to West Virginia's 25.

The Mountaineers built a 24-14 halftime lead and kept the Terrapins off the scoreboard until Diggs hauled in a 56-yard TD pass with 7:25 to play.
