Arkansas receiver arrested on pot charges

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., April 1 (UPI) -- Arkansas freshman wide receiver Kane Whitehurst was arrested on marijuana charges Sunday, police said.

The 19-year-old was released from the Washington County Detention Center in Fayetteville on $1,320 bond after being charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, ArkansasSports360.com reported.

"I am aware of the situation and it will be handled appropriately," Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino told the sports Web site through a spokesman.

A campus police arrest report stated Whitehurst was stopped by an officer who responded to a call of a black BMW sport utility vehicle squealing its tires and traveling at an "excessive speed" through a parking garage. The officer said he smelled "burnt marijuana" when he approached the SUV and a subsequent search turned up a small bag of marijuana, a pipe and other paraphernalia.

Whitehurst was redshirted last season.
