FCS playoffs to set attendance record

INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- The Football Championship Subdivision playoffs will set a record with a total attendance of more than 250,000, the NCAA said Friday.

The FCS, formally known as Division I-AA, had 20 teams qualify for its playoffs this season. The division champion will be determined Jan. 7 when Sam Houston State and North Dakota State play at Frisco, Texas.

With all 20,086 tickets at Frisco's Pizza Hut Park either sold or allocated to the participating schools, total attendance for the 19 playoff games will top 250,000.

The previous record attendance was 209,761 in 1994 when the playoffs included 16 teams and 15 games.

"Along with the record attendance throughout the national semifinals, we've seen incredible competition that is the trademark of FCS football," NCAA President Mark Emmert said.

"These teams -- and the fans who root for them -- are sure to enjoy one of the best FCS championship games ever. I share the excitement of every school, student-athlete and fan that has taken part in this tournament, and I personally look forward to being in the stands on Jan. 7."
