Former Ohio QB Schlichter in fraud charges

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Former Ohio State University quarterback Art Schlichter faces federal fraud charges in a swindling scheme being prosecuted in Franklin County, officials said.

Schlichter, 51, is expected to plead guilty Thursday to state felony counts, which involved scalping tickets to Ohio State football games and the 2011 Super Bowl, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reported Wednesday.

He's expected to then appear in U.S. District Court in Columbus on Friday to face federal charges of wire and bank fraud and making false statements on a tax return.

The federal charges stem from the same offense, a public defender representing Schlichter said.

Schlichter has been in the Franklin County jail since Feb. 14 but has asked to be released on bond to spend time with his family and seek treatment for his gambling addiction.

Schlichter was the Buckeyes' starting quarterback from 1978 to 1981, but a professional career in the NFL was ended by his gambling addiction, the Dispatch said.
