Football fans asked to police the stands

MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A vulgar T-shirt worn to a televised West Virginia University football game has prompted the school's athletic director to ask fans to police the stands.

In an open letter to Mountaineer fans, Oliver Luck quoted his father who said just because something is legal does not make it right.

Luck said the man who wore a blue T-shirt with "West F##### Virginia" on it was "not the image of our university and our state that we want to promote."

Based on the television rating of the game, that fan was viewed by a few million people around the country, Luck said in a letter sent to MSNsportsNET.com.

West Virginia University isn't alone in experiencing problems with fan behavior at football games.

The athletic director at the University of Maryland forwarded an e-mail to students from the parent of an 11-year-old boy who was exposed to profanity and other offensive behavior at a recent football game between Maryland and the University of Miami, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"Is this who you really want to be and is this the impression you want the nation to have of us?" wrote Athletic Director Kevin B. Anderson.
