Former ND coach charged in standoff

SOUTH BEND, Ind., Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Former Notre Dame Defensive Coordinator Corwin Brown faces three felony counts following a standoff with police, Indiana authorities said Tuesday.

St. Joseph County, Ind., prosecutors said Brown, who was arrested after a 7-hour standoff with police at his South Bend home Friday, has been charged with two counts of felony confinement and felony domestic abuse, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Police said the eight-year NFL veteran shot himself in the torso during the incident, in which a SWAT team tried to communicate with him via bullhorn and telephone, the newspaper reported.

Authorities said an adult female who had been struck in the head and some children had left the home earlier in the day.

The Tribune said Brown served as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator from 2007-2009, and then coached defensive backs for the New England Patriots in 2010 but wasn't retained.

The Michigan product was drafted by the Patriots as a defensive back in 1993. He played eight seasons in the NFL.
