CINCINNATI, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Yancy Gates made a free throw with 4 seconds remaining Thursday that finally clinched a 60-56 win for Cincinnati over No. 17 Louisville.
The Cardinals closed within three points with 1:14 to go on a jump shot by Peyton Siva and both sides missed a flurry of chances down the stretch.
Siva missed a layup with 25 seconds to play and Louisville's Kyle Kuric misfired on three 3-point attempts over the final 17 seconds.
Louisville's chances dimmed when it went scoreless during a stretch of 6:16 in the second half. The Cardinals had the lead when the slump began and trailed by eight when it ended.
Cashmere Wright scored 22 points for Cincinnati (20-8, 10-5 Big East Conference), which is tied for fourth place in the league race with Georgetown and South Florida. The top four teams in the Big East will be given a bye past the first two rounds of the league tournament.
Siva had 14 points for the Cardinals (21-7, 9-6). Louisville has lost two out of three after winning six in a row.
