Secretary Kerry drops puck at Olympic hockey send-off

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, an avid hockey fan, participated in an Olympic send-off Thursday evening when he dropped a ceremonial puck at the start of a Washington Capitals vs. Winnipeg Jets hockey game. Eight players from the two teams wills soon head to Sochi, Russia to compete in the Winter Olympics.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry honored Olympics-bound hockey players Thursday evening at a Winnipeg Jets and Washington Capitals game at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Kerry dropped a ceremonial puck as he was flanked on the ice by Olympians Blake Wheeler of the Jets and John Carlson of the Capitals.

Earlier Thursday, the State Department posted a photo to Twitter of Kerry, an avid hockey player, lacing up skates.


Eight of the hockey players at Thursday's game will soon be headed to compete in Sochi.

Washington Capitals players John Carlson (United States), Alex Ovechkin (Russia), Nicklas Backstrom (Sweden), and Martin Erat (Czech Republic) will represent their respective countries at the Winter Olympics.

Winnipeg Jets players Blake Wheeler (United States), Michael Frolik (Czech Republic), Ondrej Pavelec (Czech Republic), and Olli Jokinen (Finland) will represent their respective countries at the Winter Olympics.
