2016 Military Bowl update: Wake Forest Demon Deacons adjust game-plan after discovering leak

By The Sports Xchange

Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said Friday he adjusted the game plan after leaked documents were found at Louisville's Papa John's Stadium before the Demon Deacons-Cardinals matchup in November.

Clawson said on ESPN's "Mike & Mike" that his players were upset after the game, believing they had wasted their effort practicing the discarded sets that were designed to be used against the Cardinals.

"We knew we had been compromised, and as a result, a lot of those things that we had prepared we couldn't run because we knew they had it," Clawson told ESPN.

"They (the players) wanted to know, 'Why did we work on all these things? ... Why did we practice these things all week and then not use them?' They were upset that they felt we did not give them the best opportunity to win the game, and we had a team meeting and said, 'Hey, listen guys, something was compromised. We're not sure how,' and at that point it triggered an investigation."

Wake Forest fired radio analyst Tommy Elrod this week after an investigation revealed the former quarterback and assistant coach leaked game-plan information to multiple opponents.

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said Wednesday that offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway received "a few plays" from fired Elrod last month.

In addition, Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock said Thursday that a former assistant coach at the school received "game plan information" from Elrod before the schools played in 2014.

Clawson told ESPN that the cards for the game against Louisville on Nov. 12 contained "very, very detailed information" on alignments and sets, which led Wake Forest to take those plans out for the 44-12 loss.

Wake Forest finished the regular season 6-6 and will face Temple (10-3) in the Military Bowl on Dec. 27.

Clawson said he has not spoken to Elrod, who was an assistant coach for the Demon Deacons under former head coach Jim Grobe. When Grobe was fired after the 2013 season, Elrod joined Wake Forest IMG Radio Network.

"We've been compromised for three years," Clawson said Friday. "That's not right, and that's not fair."
