Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin's salary for this season is doubling to $1.4 million.

The University of Alabama Board of Trustees Compensation Committee approved the raise Friday.

Kiffin was scheduled to make $714,000 this season but now will be paid $1.4 million for eight months from July 1, 2016 to Feb. 28, 2017 when his contract expires.

Kiffin signed a three-year deal in 2014 after being fired by Southern California. His buyout from USC allowed Alabama from having to pay the market value for an offensive coordinator with his experience.

USC paid Kiffin $2.7 million in 2014, according to tax documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times. He was being paid $3.4 million a year when he was fired midway through the 2013 season.

At Alabama, Kiffin was paid $680,000 in each of his first two seasons. He was the only returning assistant for the defending champion Crimson Tide who didn't get a raise in June.

Alabama athletic director Bill Battle said Kiffin's buyout payments from USC ended June 30.

"It was a significant amount and that ended June 30 of this year," Battle told trustees. "It is what the top coordinators are making and Lane has been very effective for us the two years that he's been here. We feel like this is very appropriate for what he should be making."

Kiffin is a former head coach of the Oakland Raiders and Tennessee Volunteers in addition to USC.

Alabama's new defensive coordinator, Jeremy Pruitt, is making $1 million annually on his three-year deal.
