Report: Weather holding up Strong's departure for Texas

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Louisville head football Coach Charlie Strong was poised Saturday to succeed Mack Brown at the University of Texas, multiple media reports indicated.

The only thing holding up the official announcement appeared to be bad weather, which was blocking an 11th-hour meeting between Strong and Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich, who was out of town and unable to fly back to Kentucky due to a winter storm.

The Austin (Texas) American Statesman said Jurich was on vacation in Colorado Saturday and would fly out on a private jet once the weather in Colorado eased.

Strong and Jurich would presumably meet more as a courtesy than a move to keep Strong in Louisville. The Cardinals players were summoned to a team meeting late Sunday, at which time the announcement was expected to be officially made.

A source told the newspaper Strong met with his assistants early Saturday and told them there was nothing definitive to report. The coaches all declined comment after the meeting.

Brown stepped down at the end of the season, creating what many consider to be the top college coaching vacancy in the nation.
