DYERSVILLE, Tenn., May 11 (UPI) -- Former Austin Peay State University defensive end Jeremy Maze has died after a battle with nasopharyngeal cancer, the school announced Saturday. He was 21.
Maze, of Dyersville, Tenn., made the squad in 2010 as walk-on following a high school career as a linebacker and tight end.
He was diagnosed with cancer after being redshirted as a freshman and never ended up playing a game with the Governors.
He continued his criminal justice major studies online while dealing with the disease, the school's athletics department said in a release.
Nasopharyngeal cancer is a disease of the nasopharynx, which is the air passageway at the upper part of the throat behind the nose.
He is survived by his parents, Chrystal Maze and Dennis Young.
