Alcohol to be allowed at Gophers' games

MINNEAPOLIS, July 12 (UPI) -- Beer and wine will be sold at the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium starting in the fall, UM's governing board decided.

The Board of Regents voted 11-1 to allow beer and wine in premium seating and in a marked-off section of the stadium for general seating, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

The new policy is expected to bring in $1.5 million-$2 million in annual revenue.

University President Eric Kaler called the policy "a pilot program and an ongoing process" that will be monitored and studied.

"The university ... will continue to deliver a strong message of responsible alcohol consumption," Kaler said.

The university will be the only Big Ten school to sell alcohol in general seating, though some others sell it in premium seats.

Drinking was permitted at the Metrodome, where the Gophers played before moving to TCF Bank Stadium. The team begins its fourth season at the new stadium in the fall.
