Terps QB O'Brien transfers to Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis., March 28 (UPI) -- Quarterback Danny O'Brien has transferred from the University of Maryland to the University of Wisconsin, the school said Wednesday.

O'Brien started 17 games for the Terrapins during the past two years. He will assume the mantle of graduated senior Russell Wilson, who took the Badgers to a Big Ten championship and an appearance in the Rose Bowl last season.

"We're excited that Danny has chosen to attend Wisconsin," Badgers head Coach Bret Bielema said. "The first thing we did when we were aware of Danny's interest was to try and find out what type of person he was and if he would fit into our program."

The coach said he discovered O'Brien was "a tremendous person and has great character."

The signal-caller was named ACC Rookie of the Year in 2010 after racking up 2,438 yards and 22 touchdowns, but struggled last season before fracturing his left arm in a Nov. 12 contest against Notre Dame, putting him out for the rest of the year.

He has two year of college eligibility remaining.
