Hawaii hires Chow as football coach

HONOLULU, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- The University of Hawaii announced Wednesday that Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow had been hired as the school's football coach.

Chow replaces Greg McCackin, who retired after coaching the Warriors for four seasons. Chow is a native of Hawaii.

"I am happy and proud to welcome Norm Chow as our new football coach," Hawaii Athletic Director Jim Donovan said. "Norm is one of the best offensive minds in the country and we are thrilled that he's able to come home and lead our football program.

"This is special not only for the university, but for him. His wide-open offense and name recognition will only help us in recruiting the top talent to our university and football program."

Chow has been named the national assistant coach of the year three times and has been a part of three national championship teams -- at BYU in 1984 and at USC in 2003 and 2004.

Chow will remain with Utah until that school's appearance in the Sun Bowl against Georgia Tech on Dec. 31.
