LSU will face Alabama for BCS championship

IRVING, Texas, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Alabama edged Oklahoma State for the No. 2 spot in the final BCS poll released Sunday, earning a rematch with No. 1 Louisiana State for the national title.

Oklahoma State (11-1) saw its hopes for a title shot rise Saturday with a dominating 44-10 win over Oklahoma, but Alabama (11-1) barely retained its hold on the second spot.

The Crimson Tide nosed out OSU for the No. 2 spot by just 0.009 points, setting up a national title-game rematch of a Nov. 5 contest won 9-6 by the undefeated Tigers (13-0).

LSU earned a perfect 1.000 BCS average in Sunday's final standings, completing a season in which it scored wins over eight ranked opponents.

The Tigers will also have something of a home field advantage over the Tide in the Jan. 9 BCS championship game because it will be held at the Louisiana Superdome, where they won their last national title in 2007.

Oklahoma State instead settled for trip to the Jan. 5 Fiesta Bowl, where the Cowboys will face No. 4 Stanford (11-1) and Heisman Trophy candidate Andrew Luck.

The other season-ending bowl match-ups were also completed with Sunday's poll.

Wisconsin (11-2) will face Oregon (11-2) in the Jan. 2 Rose Bowl, while Clemson (10-3) -- which upset Virginia Tech in the ACC title game -- will square off against West Virginia (9-3) in the Jan. 4 Orange Bowl.

The 23rd-ranked Mountaineers (9-3) claimed the Big East's automatic bid by finishing higher than conference co-champs Louisville and Cincinnati in Sunday's final poll.

Despite its ACC loss, Virginia Tech (11-2) still claimed an at-large spot to the Jan. 3 Sugar Bowl, where the Hokies will play Michigan.

Left out of the picture was Boise State (11-1), which finished seventh and out of the running for one of the BCS bowl games. Instead, the Broncos said on their Web site they will play Arizona State (6-6) in MAACO Bowl Las Vegas XX Dec. 22.
