Football player-slaying trial locale set

BOULDER, Colo., Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A judge in Colorado has denied a change of venue for the man suspected of killing University of New Hampshire football player Todd Walker during a robbery.

Attorneys for Kevin McGregor had wanted his January trial to be moved out of Boulder County because of pretrial publicity. District Judge D.D. Mallard ruled Tuesday, however, concerns about news coverage can be addressed during the selection of a jury to hear the case against McGregor, who is charged with first-degree murder, felony murder and aggravated robbery, the Boulder Daily Camera reported.

Walker, 20, who was from Edwards, Colo., was shot to death in March as he walked home with a friend on University Hill in Boulder.

Defense attorneys also are seeking to have the judge toss McGregor's alleged confession, evidence police gathered at his place of employment and an uncertain identification of McGregor by a friend of Walker who was with the victim when he was shot, the newspaper said.

McGregor has told authorities the fatal shooting occurred after Walker was angered by suggestive comments he made to Walker's friend and swung at him. He told police Walker yanked on his arm after he pulled a gun and shot into the air.
