IRVING, Texas, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- LSU claimed the No. 1 spot Sunday in the first Bowl Championship Series rankings, which are used to determine the teams that play for the national title.
Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State were second through fifth, followed by Wisconsin, Clemson, Stanford, Arkansas and Oregon.
There are 10 unbeaten teams remaining in major college football, including the first eight in the initial BCS standings. Kansas State, ranked 11th, and No. 19 Houston also have perfect records to this point in the season.
The BCS rankings are compiled from the Harris Poll, a poll of NCAA coaches and six computer rankings that use various criteria.
An average of those six compilations are put together and expressed in a number.
LSU had the largest number at .9522 and Alabama was next at .9519. Oklahoma came in with a .9301, followed by Oklahoma State at .8568 and Boise State at .8027.
LSU and Alabama will meet on Nov. 5 in Tuscaloosa. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will face each other in Stillwater on Dec. 3.
The top two teams in the BCS rankings at the end of the season will meet in the national championship game Jan. 9 in New Orleans.
