Tyler Cook: Iowa sophomore has dunk of the weekend

Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Iowa sophomore Tyler Cook delivered a tremendous one-handed dunk this weekend against Penn State.

The Hawkeyes still lost the game 77-73 to the Nittany Lions Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, but Cook's slam could be heard around the country. The 6-foot-9 forward was sprinting down ahead of the ball during a breakaway with 1:11 remaining in the game.

Cook caught a full court heave from guard Jordan Bohannon as he neared the right side of the 3-point line. He took one dribble before floating toward the paint. Cook took one step on the edge of the lane and jumped right into Nittany Lions senior guard Shep Garner.

The 6-foot-2 Garner had no chance. Cook glided toward the rim, with the ball palmed in his left hand. He elevated over the guard and slammed the ball through the rim, with his body nearly parallel to the court. Cook was also fouled on the play. He made his free throw, getting the Hawkeyes back in the game, trailing 69-67.

Cook had a game-high 23 points in the loss. He also had 12 rebounds and four assists for the Hawkeyes.

"We did a good job on defense, other than Cook," Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said, according to the Iowa basketball website. "He's a great player. It doesn't matter if we doubled him or if he had single coverage.  He did whatever he needed to do and got himself to the free throw line."

Iowa has its first Big Ten road game of the season at 7:03 p.m. Monday against the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington.
