Adam Jones powers Team USA over Canada
PHOENIX, March 10 (UPI) -- Adam Jones blasted a go-ahead double in the eighth inning Sunday and Team USA advanced at the World Baseball Classic with a 9-4 win over Canada.
With the United States trailing 3-2 entering the eighth, Joe Mauer led off with a single and David Wright followed with a walk off Jimmy Henderson (0-1).
Jones then belted a pitch into the left-center field gap, scoring pinch-runner Willie Bloomquist and Wright to put the United States ahead for good.
Jones scored on Shane Victorino's single and Team USA went on to record the victory in a do-or-die game, advancing to the WBC second round while Canada was eliminated.
Jones and Eric Hosmer each posted three RBI while Ben Zobrist went 3-for-5 with a run scored.
Heath Bell (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless seventh inning.
Michael Saunders hit a two-run homer and Adam Loewen added two RBI for Team Canada.
Kenseth gambles on tires, wins Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, March 10 (UPI) -- Matt Kenseth took a chance by running on worn tires but it paid of Sunday with a Sprint Cup victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on his 41st birthday.
Kenseth led the final 41 laps on old tires after opting to only refuel on his last pit stop, then held off a hard-charging Kasey Kahne down the stretch to record his 25th career Sprint Cup Series victory.
It was his first, however, as a member of Joe Gibbs Racing, coming in his third start for the No. 20 team after 13 years with Roush Fenway Racing.
Kahne led for 114 laps but finished 0.6 seconds behind Kenseth.
Defending Sprint Cup champ Brad Keselowski, who also opted not to change tires on his final pit stop, settled for third place.
Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards rounded out the Top 5.
Woods completes WGC-Cadillac victory
DORAL, Fla., March 10 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods wrapped up his seventh career WGC-Cadillac Championship victory Sunday despite stumbling a bit down the stretch, posting a two-stroke win.
Wood, who led by as many five strokes in the final round, bogeyed two of the last three holes but still had enough of a cushion to claim the victory with a 1-under 71.
He finished 72 holes at 19-under-par 269 for his 17th triumph in a World Golf Championship event.
Steve Stricker grabbed sole possession of second place a 4-under 68, ending at 17-under 271.
Sharing third place at minus-14 were Graeme McDowell (72), Sergio Garcia (69), Phil Mickelson (71) and Adam Scott (64).
Jennifer Capriati investigated in stalking
NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla., March 10 (UPI) -- Former tennis star Jennifer Capriati was investigated for stalking after she allegedly punched her ex-boyfriend at a Florida health club, police said.
Investigators in the small town of North Palm Beach said they appeared to have probable cause to arrest Capriati on battery and stalking charges in the incident; however the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post said Sunday it was not clear if charges would be filed.
Capriati, 36, and Ivan Brannan have had a series of run-ins since they stopped dating about a year ago. Capriati allegedly has peppered Brannan with phone calls and text messages, and has shown up uninvited at his job and the gym.
Their latest confrontation led to Capriati allegedly socking Brannan in the chest repeatedly until a yoga instructed stepped in to break it up.
A representative for Capriati, who was ranked No. 1 in the world during her playing days, denied the allegations and called them a "over-exaggeration," the Post said.
