NEW YORK, Dec. 18 (UPI) --
U.S. stock indexes rode a roller coaster Tuesday, beginning up, dropping during midday and closing the session on a modest up-tick.
The Dow Jones industrial average added 65.27 points, or 0.50 percent, and closed at 13,232.47. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 9.08 points, or 0.64 percent, and finished at 1,454.98. The Nasdaq composite index moved up 21.57 points, or 0.84 percent, and ended the session at 2,596.03.
"We have a real tug of war in the market -- the big question is whether we're going into recession in 2008," Al Goldman, chief market strategist at A.G. Edwards, told The Wall Street Journal. "Nobody knows, but the mood is so nervous that (the market looks) very indecisive and volatile."
On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,922 stocks advanced and 1,245 declined on a listed volume of 3.7 billion shares.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose yielded 4.133 percent.
The dollar was mixed. The euro gained to $1.4403 from $1.4391 Monday. The dollar advanced to 113.31 yen from 112.94.
Britain's FTSE 100 Index rose 0.8 percent to close at 6,326.90.
