Ex-Romanian PM attempts suicide

BUCHAREST, Romania, June 21 (UPI) -- Doctors said Thursday former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Natase has survived an attempt to take his own life.

The former Romanian head of state shot and wounded himself in the neck after the country's Supreme Court refused to overturn the two-year sentence he received for a graft conviction, Russia's RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The apparent suicide attempt occurred as police arrived at his home late Wednesday to arrest him, the Romanian Public Ministry said.

Natase, 61, was taken to a Bucharest hospital where he underwent successful surgery Thursday morning.

Doctors said the bullet came close to vital organs, HotNews.ro reported.

Natase's lawyers said they would submit a request to have the former prime minister's sentence suspended on medical grounds. He was found guilty of illegally raising $2.1 million during his 2004 election campaign.

Natase served as prime minister of Romania from 2000 to 2004.
