Romanian government falls

BUCHAREST, Romania, April 27 (UPI) -- Romania's government collapsed Friday after a no-confidence vote in Parliament on a censure motion filed by the opposition, officials said.

The motion passed with 235 votes, four more than required, the official Agerpres news agency reported.

The vote came less than three months after Prime Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu took office and marks the second time this year the Romanian government has collapsed, CNN reported.

The opposition said the Ungureanu government has turned into "a threat" for Romanians because of its policies.

The motion by the opposition Social Democrats and Liberals said the Cabinet lacked transparency in selling natural resources and in approving transfers of money to local authorities in ruling parties.

The no-confidence vote came after protests over austerity measures and corruption.

Social Democrat opposition leader Victor Ponta said after the vote he was prepared to become the country's new prime minister.

"Our coalition is ready to form a new government. We already have a government proposal," Ponta said.
