Cairo protesters seek end to military rule

CAIRO, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Egyptian protesters called for a quick end to military rule Friday, staging a large demonstration in Cairo titled "Go Back To Your Military Posts."

Last week, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces announced that groups holding demonstrations would be responsible for security in the future. Tahrir Square was empty of police and even traffic wardens Friday, Bikya Masr reported.

Organizers from the Youth Democratic Coalition and the 6 of April Movement blocked some entrances to Tahrir Square and arranged for volunteers to direct traffic.

Thousands of people gathered. They demanded that the government stop using military tribunals to try civilians, set up a schedule for presidential elections and get rid of the emergency law that was used under former President Hosni Mubarak to quell political dissent.

The interim government recently extended the emergency law, which had been scheduled to expire in September.

Hundreds of people have been tried by military tribunals since Mubarak was ousted.
