Officials exhausted from sinkhole activity

DAISETTA, Texas, May 11 (UPI) -- Authorities in Daisetta, Texas, are exhausted from the constant stream of curious onlookers at the site of a large sinkhole, a fire official says.

Hull-Daisetta Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Brad Taylor said a growing number of people are being drawn to the site of the 5-acre sinkhole, and authorities have struggled to keep them at a safe distance, the Houston Chronicle said Sunday.

"We're just tired," Taylor said Saturday. "We had a whole bunch of people up here yesterday wanting to go look at it."

Daisetta Mayor Lynn Wells said the sinkhole has caused several local wells and a major pipeline to be temporarily shut down and is hurting business.

"Some of us drive to Beaumont or Houston to work, but our main bread and butter is right here," Wells told the Chronicle. "My heart goes out to the ones who's jobs are in jeopardy."
